    Missouri

Missouri was named for the Algonquian Indian word meaning "town of the large canoes". Missouri is sometimes referred to as the "Mother of the West" because it once lay at the frontier of the country, and served as a starting point for westbound pioneers, including Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
