The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge was approved in 1869 by President Ulysses S. Grant and completed in 1883. It remains one of New York City's most celebrated architectural wonders. Designed by the talented engineer John Augustus Roebling (1806-1869) and completed by his equally enterprising son, washington Roebling (1837-1926), thi exquisite structure was, at the time of its completion, the longest bridge in the worlds.
